Jindřich Toman

Jindřich Toman was born in 1944 in Prague and studied linguistics and German literature at Charles University and the University of Freiburg. His books include: The Magic of a Common Language, a monograph on the Prague Linguistics Circle; Czech Cubism and the Book, a study of modernist book culture; Photography, Photomontage and the Culture of Mechanical Reproduction, an overview of Czech interwar photography and photomontage in print media; as well as a seminal study on the reception of Dada in Czechoslovakia, “Now you see it, now you don’t”.
He is currently professor of Slavic languages and literatures at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
