Tom Sandqvist

Sweden

Tom Sandqvist is a writer and scholar who graduated in 1979 from the University of Helsinki and defended his doctor´s thesis on Minimalism and its theoretical back ground in American aesthetics in 1988 at the University of Lund, Sweden.

Sandqvist is currently associate professor in art history at the University of Lapland, Finland, and guest professor in art history and the history of ideas at the University of Arts, Craft and Design in Stockholm.

Sandqvist´s ground-breaking Dada East reveals that Dada did not spring full-grown from a Zürich literary salon but grew out of an already vibrant artistic tradition in eastern Europe,  transposed to Switzerland by five unwieldly Romanians.

"Dada was an amalgamation, a chemistry of all prevailing currents. Dada was a kind of litmus paper. It remains more of a post-modern state of mind than a modern one."

The Sacred Cause, a study of central and east European Modernism, is forthcoming.

Tom Sandqvist lives and works in Lid, Nyköping, and Stockholm, Sweden.
